| Abstract | China could be a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) by the end of 1997, WTO deputy director-general Jesus Seade told the 1996 Europe/East Asia Economic Summit in Hong Kong in November 1996. In the case of China, the technical work has been done and politically everything is in place. So it is possible that it will be admitted in the course of 1997. Hopes of a breakthrough to end wrangling over China's admission to the Geneva-based global trade body were fueled by news that a European initiative had been enthusiastically received in Beijing. |
