AbstractThe year-long survey was conducted among 310,000 students comprising 21 nationalities from 1,800 schools across China. Compared with the figures in 1986, boys aged between six and seven in urban areas are, on average, 1.7 centimetres taller and 1.16 kilograms heavier, while girls' height and weight have increased 2 centimetres and 1.28 kilograms respectively. Better healthcare and dietary changes have narrowed the health gap between children in the north and the south, although those living in large cities like Beijing and Shanghai are still healthier.
