Abstract | Strained Sino-US relations appeared to have been repaired over the mid-November 1996 in a series of top-level sessions, culminating in a summit between Presidents Jiang Zemin and Bill Clinton in Manila on 24 November 1996. Clinton spoke of Washington's desire for a "genuine partnership" with China, and said that the US was interested in a strategic dialogue partnership with China and not confrontation and containment. He stressed it was one of his major second-term tasks to improve bilateral ties with China. The improved Sino-US relations have also led to similar trends in China's relations with other countries, notably Japan. Also, Sino-Japanese relations are discussed in this article. |
