AbstractThis article reports the results of a restropective survey into the long term tolerance of low dose aspirin when used as secondary prophylaxis after myocardial infarction (MI), with an objective of evaluating the magnitude and outcome of aspirin intolerance after MI, and studying the associated factors with adverse gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. The study analysed all the casenotes of patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit, United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong from 1st April 1991 to 30th June 1995. It is concluded that a significant proportion of patients could not benefit from long term aspirin for secondary prevention after myocardial infarction. The potential adverse effects due to aspirin should be continually monitored in every patient.
