AbstractBar coding is one of the cheapest and automated forms of data capture, which allows data to be scanned into computers instead of being keyed-in manually. This can save input effort and eliminate many human errors. Founded in 1985 and 1987 respectively, Tech Trend Engineering Ltd and Million Tech Development Ltd - the two major bar code players in Hong Kong - have witnessed the growth and change of bar coding in the territory. The bar code system was not widely accepted until the formal establishment of the HKANA (Hong Kong Article Numbering Association) whose role is to advise its members and the industry at large on the use of international standards for not only bar-coding, but also electronic data interchange (EDI).
