AbstractOne of Hong Kong's largest villages, Rennies Mill, stands deserted. Its former residents have been moved from their homes, many to be relocated to public housing or other places where their pets could not follow. The empty houses, the narrow streets and the surrounding hillside are home to hundreds of abandoned pets. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) inspectors have since September 1996 made three trips to the area, trying to catch as many of the animals as possible. The work is difficult; the terrain is hilly and the former village is spread over a couple of square miles. It is made harder by the weather; inspectors have been working in both searing heat and torrential downpours - sometimes on the same day. The narrow, labyrinthine streets make it easy for those animals still mobile to evade capture.
