AbstractThe Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) Limited estimates that it handles 60% of the total Shenzhen container throughput transported to and from the Pearl River region, while Shekou Container Terminals (SCT) Limited handles less than 20% and the Shenzhen Kaifeng Terminal (KFT) Company Limited in the port of Chiwan about 12%. The strongest marketing point for the three ports in Shenzhen is their capability to offer more competitive rates than Hong Kong's port. Since it started operations in July 1994 upon the completion of Phase I of development, YICT has embarked on an aggressive marketing campaign both aimed at shipping lines to encourage them to call on the port, and at shippers based in the Pearl River delta. Cargo handled at Yantian is sourced mostly from Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Huizhou and other parts of the Pearl River. The US is the top destination for containers shipped from YICT, followed by Europe, and about 9% to Hong Kong.
