Abstract | In 1949 there were very few reservoirs with a capactity of over a hundred million cubic metres in the whole of China. There are more than 360, to which should be added a further 2,500 whose capacity ranges between ten and a hundred million cubic metres. Most of these reservoirs were built during the 60s and 70s. These achievements were duly celebrated on the television and in an educational booklet which was widely distributed in the primary schools. Lesson 22 of the booklet is typical in its description of a visit to Liujiaxia, the second and most important of the Yongjing hydro-electric installations, which was completed in 1969 and was until very recently the most important in the whole of China. |
