AbstractThe Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was the only Hong Kong tertiary institution to have a team competing in a prestigious computer contest in the United States in early 1996. HKUST's success is due to its teaching method and top faculty staff, according to its president, professor Woo Chia-wei. The campus adopts the American system of continuous assessment. Students are given loads of homework and regularly quizzed. In contrast, examinations are given only at the end of semesters in the British system. In this article, the author reports on the remarkable achievements of an institution once dismissed by critics as "nothing more than an expensive ivory tower."
