Abstract | On the scale at which reclamation is carried out in Hong Kong, 20 ha hardly makes up a significant project. When it involves building six new ferry piers while existing ones continues to operate uniterrupted, however, it becomes a totally different story. Work started in September 1993. To achieve zero interruption to ferry movement, the partners split the reclamation works into two phases. During the first phase, ferries were allowed to use the existing piers located in the middle of the reclamation area while two bunds were rclaimed at the two ends. A combination of permanent and temporary seawall was constructed to enclose the bunds. Three ferry piers were built at the east bund and one ferry pier was built at the west bund before the old piers in the middle were demolished to make way for the next phase of the reclamation. |
