Abstract | The importance of Hong Kong as a textile centre is emphasised by the frequent trade fairs held - like the Interyarn event which saw eighty-nine yarn producers from around the world converge on Hong Kong to find buyers, place orders and swap name cards in the hpoe of forging a successful future partnership. Through these trade fairs, Hong Kong is establishing its importance in the textile and clothing business less as a producer but more as a logistics control centre for production activity moving to Asia's low-wage regions in this labour-intensive industry. As fashion cycles becomes shorter and the market demads faster delivery, the importance of an Asian fashion business centre is set to increase, with Hong Kong pushing hard ahead of its rivals to fulfill that role. |
