Abstract | Hong Kong's turbulent path towards reverting to Chinese rule in 1997 has directly begun to impact on the city's hotels. The lavish Grand Hyatt was virtually under siege in April 1996 when rowdy demonstrators staged a dangerous tyre-burning, fist-waving political protest. They tried to storm steel anti-riot barricades, almost overwhelming tough Gurkha security guards, and police had to be called in to prevent anti-China demonstrators from storming the lobby. |
