| Abstract | In mid-October 1996, protesters from Taiwan and Hong Kong clambered ashore one of the islands in the disputed chain the Japanese call Senkaku and planted the flags of China and Taiwan. The emotional stakes were high because the cause had gained a martyr 11 days earlier - Hong Kong protester David Chan, who died after plunging, for symbolism's sake, into the islands' waters. The outpouring of nationalism is not universal in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Japan. But the four governments would be wise not to ignore it. The governments' responses are given in this article. |
