| Abstract | From ancient times, China has stressed the importance of educating its young, with books and other publications traditionally respected as "food for thought." When the country began in its modernization drive, Chinese publishers were encouraged to satisfy the nation's voracious appetite for reading with spiritually uplifting material. A book exhibition in Beijing in mid-July 1996 highlighted the achievements of Chinese publishers over the past 47 years, with particular regard to the past five years. |
