| Abstract | Despite limited funds and largely out-of-date facilities, Chinese geo-scientists have contributed much to the national economy in recent decades. The discovery of Daqing and several other major oil fields, the result of revolutionary theories developed within their own ranks, has since the 1960s singnificantly reduced China's dependence on petroleum imports. Similar successes are echoed in their pinpointing of many mineral resources the country was previously thought not to possess in any great quantity. The prediction of earthquakes is another academic area in which the scientists excel. |
