AbstractHaving sensed a revival of Chinese nationalism, some Western China-watchers are beginning to doubt whether the country's foreign investment policy will change. However, comments the author, China economy has grown, both in size and structure, in a remarkably different way from that of the 1960s. Just as it is impossible to contain it from outside, it would involve huge cost - and be self-destructive - to bring the economy back into isolation from within. It may turn out that saying no to foreign investment may do more harm than good to China. The author remarks that foreign investment and nationalism are not inherently antithetical.
