AbstractConstruction of the Hong Kong and Kowloon new airport express railway stations is 12-14 weeks behind schedule and in danger of falling further behind if a labour shortage is not made up soon. But finding the numbers of trained manpower required in a short time is not going to be easy, and contractors on the project are being hit by a wage spiral sparked by the labour shortage. If operation of the railway is delayed beyond its scheduled opening date, then Mass Transit Railway Corp itself will suffer some financial impact, ultimately risking being translated into high fares for users, though the company's project director says the company cannot evaluate that impact at this stage.
