AbstractIn China, the most famous movies are by the country's "Fifth Generation" filmmakers, directors who have largely concentrated on the past rather than the present. But there is one Fifth Generation director, Huang Jianxin, whose work has consistently satirized Deng Xiaoping's China, all the while evading bans and garnering international attention. Huang's latest, "Signal Left, Turn Right", lampoons the workings of a Shenzhen driving school and follows a motley crew of students. He uses situations in microcosm to symbolize Chinese society larger.
