| Abstract | This article assesses the impact of the two interest rate reductions in December 1995 and February 1996 in domestic consumption. It concludes that the rate cuts in Hong Kong and China, together with rising consumer confidence from a gradually improving unemployment rate and a positive wealth effect stemming from rallies in local stock and property markets, will support the recovery in consumptioin growth in the second half of 1996. |
