AbstractOne of the main objectives in the treatment of diabetes is the prevention of onset and progression of complications. In Hong Kong, an estimated 15,000 diabetics have proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 12,000 have macular oedema. Optimal glycaemic control has been shown to reduce the development and progression of microangiopathic complications. Aggressive control of high blood pressure and hyperlipidaemia reduces cardiovascular mortality and morbidity as well as the rate of decline in renal function. In this article, the management of these complications and its closely associated conditions, including hypertension and dyslipidaemia, will be discussed.
