| Abstract | Many contractors in Hong Kong still believe that a dollar spent on safety is a dollar wasted. No wonder, then, that horrific accidents still occur on construction sites even after years of safety promotion. Clearly, a safety culture has yet to take root in the local construction industry. Dr Alex Cheung, chairman of the Safety Specialist Group of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, is currently drafting a safety management system for the Asia Pacific Occupation Safety & Health Organization (APOSHO), whose members include Hong Kong's Occupational Safety & Health Council (OSHC). He foresees that, like its quality management sister, ISO 9000, accreditation to the international safety management system ISO 18000 will ultimately become mandatory. |
