AbstractApproximately 50% of patients with NIDDM in Hong Kong have hypertension. Despite a relative resistance by NIDDM patients to the hypotensive effects of ACEI, the progression of nephropathy is slowed by ACEI treatment independent of changes in blood pressure. The Prince of Wales Hospital of Hong Kong has therefore examined the relative roles of the ACE gene, hypertension and nephropathy in NIDDM patients. The findings are summarized in this article.
