| Abstract | China's experimentation with bankruptcy among state entreprises, which began in 1995, is gaining pace with 50 firms declared insolvent in the first four months of 1996, compared with 103 for the whole of 1995. Compared with the number of applications - 2,200 cases were filed in 1995 - the ratio of firms closing is low but the statistics still suggest that the Chinese Government may be making headway in its plan to reform the state sector by forcing unprofitable companies to shape up or ship out. |
