Abstract | For China's campaign to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), now eight years old, the year 1996 has begun in similar fashion to 1995 - with conflicting signals from the key players as to whether Beijing will finally succeed. The Chinese government has made a number of conciliatory moves, which many officials at the WTO and in the overwhelming majority of countries which support early admission agree should speed up the process. But the United States still insists that its own conditions have not yet been met. |
