AbstractConstructed on a 1,248-hectare platform at Chek Lap Kok, off north Lantau Island, Hong Kong's new international airport is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. Chek Lap Kok - together with the rest of the Airport Core Programme - encompasses 1,670 hectares of new land, 34 kilometers of new highways, the world's longest suspension bridge (carrying road and rail) and much more: a third cross-harbour road tunnel, an express railway serving the new airport, and Hong Kong's ninth new town at Tung Chung. Architect Norman Foster, Donna Mongan of the Airport Authority and engineer Mott Connell talks about the project in this article.
