| Abstract | In late January 1995, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority took unprecedented action - in response to the devaluation of the Mexican Peso. It called a meeting of Southeast Asia's "central" bankers to discuss possible cooperation to defend their currencies against future speculation. The meeting illustrated the stature of Hong Kong, and the maturity and credibility of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, which acted deftly to avert speculation against the Hong Kong dollar immediately after the collapse of the Mexican peso. |
