AbstractFor long described as the Pearl of Orient, Hong Kong has a flourishing business selling the real things. For just as long, almost, Hong Kong has for the most part been dependent for supplies on Japan. Today, however, jewellers turn to suppliers in Australia, the South Sea Island community, and China for their needs. The results is a wide range of product, quality, size, colour, and even shape. Similarly, this means vendors are able to offer a very wide range of prices - something to suit all tastes, in fact. Indeed, this ability may well be keeping the pearls sector alive as, with the world economic situation in a nosedive for most of the last five years, sometimes selling in the low-end market has been a last resort that paid handsome dividends.
