Abstract | In 1978, Deng Xiaoping came up with the concept of "One Country-Two Systems", and it was intended to achieve a breakthrough in the reunification with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Recent tension in the Taiwan Straits highlights the Hong Kong community's lack of understanding of the Chinese leadership. In 1995, few people in Hong Kong anticipated that Chinese leaders would resort to missile tests and military exercises to deter the independence tendency in Taiwan. Now Hong Kong people realise the significance of sovereignty and reunification in the eyes of Beijing. |
