AbstractHistorically, places of worship have embodied what is best in architecture. They have traditionally dominated their communities, Promethean signifiers of God on earth and man's heavenly a-spirations. In the aftermath of the industrial revolution, however, and with the onset of capitalism, a different kind of opium became available to the masses. The architectural landscape of the twentieth century is dedicated to commerce. This article provides a special feature of contemporary 'church' buildings in Hong Kong, which include Chi Lin Redevelopment, St. Francis Church, The Methodist Church, Fairview Park Alliance Church and Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, to discover how houses of worship, even when revivalist, are adapting to such climatic conditions.
