| Abstract | By mistake or heaven's blessing, the fact that the rich natural resources and pristine beauty of the Mekong have remained largely untouched by man's genius, greed, colonial conquests or civil wars, was probably one of the wonders of the 19th and 20th centuries. Small wonder then, when the United Nations assumed sponsorship in 1995 of a body of concerned nations to gently wake the Mekong from its deep slumber, the move found support from many quarters. |
