AbstractIn a colony like Hong Kong, the colonizers are the dominant group of people while the colonized are supposed to be subservient to them and controlled by these holders of the sovereignty. Before the colonized can gain power, they have to acquire knowledge; before they can acquire knowledge, they have to succumb to colonial education first. A Chinese writer, David T.K. Wong, is a good example to illustrate this point. He used to be a Hong Kong Chinese and is now living in America. He has conceded to colonialism and Englishness in order to gain power. From his collection of works, Lost River and Other Stories, we can see how this native intellectual undergoes the changes caused by colonization.
