Article TitleThe negotiation of Chinese culture in the life of a Hakka Christian man / Nicole Constable.
Is Part OfChing feng ; v.39, no.1, Mar 1996, p.25-47.
AbstractMr. C is a Hakka Christian who was born in Wuhua in the Hakka district of Meixian in 1941. He now lives in retirement in Hong Kong, in a New Territories village near Fanling. This paper focuses on certain aspects of Mr. C's life history in order to address the question of how he has "managed" or "negotiated" Chinese culture and social institutions. By focusing mainly on the life and views of one man, the author hopes to demonstrate the ways in which institutions are linked with personal and social identities, and also to examine the wider sociocultural implications of the way in which culture is manipulated by individuals and group as active agents, not simply as passive subjects.
