| Abstract | It is a mark of the times that judgements can be freely passed on a nation's past, present and future by pundits and politicians of a foreign country and, just as readily dismissed as academic if not just so much hot air. It is probably also a mark of the times that the response such judgements are likely to provoke in the country or region concerned will depend largely on whether they are made on that country's own merits or by the yardstick of some kind of value which the foreign critics hold to be universal. |
