AbstractEnvironmentally conscious visitors to Chongqing and Liuzhou, two of half a dozen cities in China now prey to aacid rain, cannot help but feel there is death in the air. Hilly Chongqing was known as "the capital of fog" in the 1940s. At that time it was China's wartime capital resisting the Japanese invaders. The fog is still there - but with a difference. During the war it proved a blessing as it provided the city with some protection against Japanese bombers. today, it is a hateful, acidic curse. The heavy humid smog "tastes almost like vinegar," as one Chongqing resident put it. heavy rainfall means disaster for crops, especially vegetables, melons and fruit trees as well as for anything made of metal.
