AbstractZhu Wei is a "Chinese grunge" artist, dressed in oversized shirt, fatigue pants and unlaced PLA combat boots in the Guangzhou Art Expo. Zhu's paintings, unmounted, pinned to red crepe paper on the plastic walls, stood out as exceptional. He was, afterwards, discovered by Stephen McGuinness of Plum Blossoms Gallery, whom he started an artist-gallery relationship with. Zhu belongs to the Post-'89 generation of "Cynical Realist" painters, yet in many ways he stands apart. The inspiration for his art is always political, but with a rare self-expressive quality.
