| Abstract | During his recent 10-day trip to Canada and the United States, Hong Kong Governor Chirs Patten met President Bill Clinton and trumpeted the territory's free-market message on Capitol Hill. The stated purpose of the visit: to push for renewal of China's Most Favored Nation trading status, and request Washington's support in guarding Hong Kong's civil rights during its transition to Chinese sovereignty. But to many in Hong Kong, Patten's road show had another more distrubing effect: it further inflamed passions in the already rocky run-up to the July 1997 handover. |
