AbstractThe collapse of a footbridge at Tseng Kwan O in January 1996 has again called attention to the need for vigilance in the area of falsework. A United Kingdom committee in the 1970s found that technical faults and procedural inadequacies are usually the main causes of falsework failures. The most common technical faults are instability, overloading, inadequate foundation, defective materials and improper dismantling. Procedural failures keep these weaknesses undetected or ill-treated. This paper reviews the causes identified and discusses some case studies of falsework failures.
