AbstractHong Kong's version of a full-blown economic recession has left consumers cautious. Nevertheless, many local analysts and even civil servants are stubbornly confident that consumer spending - and the economy - is headed for a rebound. Why? Because lower inflation is increasing real purchasing power; tourists eager to walk along Queenway before July 1, 1997, will fill hotels and retail shops; and there are early signs that climbing property prices will soon create a positive wealth effect, which would be especially embraced by those who bought property in 1994 and still suffer from negative equity.
