Abstract | The Zhejiang Village (Zhejiang cun), the most well-known of the migrant centres, situated in the Dahongmen area of Fengtai, is a particularly interesting case, with its 50,000 native Pekingers and 25,000 provincials, 80% of whom are from Zhejiang province. It is also a striking example of how shady, feudalistic organisations can proliferate on the outskirts of a city in areas abandoned to their fate by a weakened central authority. As such, it is one indication of the failure of government policy to contain the rural exodus. |
