| Abstract | The hysteria that built up during the Taiwan presidential election campaign was not confined to the two sides, China and Taiwan. Indeed, voices of common sense and calm could sometimes be heard on both sides of the Strait. China has already agreed that Taiwan could keep its own armed forces after reunification, and in other respects the autonomy of Hong Kong is the model. That is why, pace Bowring, Hong Kong will continue to be able to play the Taiwan card in its poker game with China. |
