AbstractDemocratic Hong Kong and undemocratic China. That is the contrast usually painted, and it scares some Hong Kongers. But the real contrast is not quite so stark, and the forebodings are exaggerated. It is well known how two iron-willed Hong Kong women, Liu Yiu-chiu and Lau Pui-king, electrified the National and Guangdong People's Congresses respectively, by openly dissenting to prevent the traditional rubber-stamp "carried nem con."
