| Abstract | The common image of counties in far-flung Sichuan province is one of dilapidated dwellings, dirty streets and people in shabby clothes. Unfortunately, this tends to be a true picture of most of the 219 counties scattered throughout the mountainous regions of the province. However, there are exceptions. Some 30 kilometres north of Zigong city, China's largest well-salt producing centre, lies Weiyuan, which until recently was as poor as most other mountainous counties in Sichuan. |
