| Abstract | Local and international television service providers continue to stumble into bottomless-pit investments. Murdoch's Sydney-based News Corp announced that a new tripartite joint venture - called the Phoenix Satellite Television Co - will funnel Star TV programming through China's numerous cable stations, while Wharf Cable has also had a good-news-bad-news first quarter. The government has extended its pay-TV licence until after 1997, effectively shutting out other satellite-based competitors such as General Electric's NBC Asia and Star TV. |
