AbstractAs China modernizes its defense capabilities, international attention has tended to focus on the area of conventional arms. Constantly in the headlines are Beijing's acquisition of 24 Su-27 fighters from Russia and its supposed bid to buy an aircraft carrier from Ukraine. Yet, of course, China has for three decades been one of the world's five declared nuclear powers. It maintains an arsenal of ground-based ballistic missiles with atomic warheads, as well as weapons deliverable by submarines and bombers.
