| Abstract | With China's economic soft landing largely accomplished and inflation down to a tolerable 10 per cent or so, in 1996's session of the National People's Congress got under way in a more relaxed atmostphere than a year ago, when inflation was hovering dangerously above 20 per cent. The success in taking some of the heat out of the economy is well-timed. While inflation continues to a be concern, it is no longer a major distraction for the deputies of China's top law-making body as they debate the nation's future in a session devoted mainly to examining the nation's economic development plans for the next 15 years. |
