| Abstract | Tensions across the Taiwan Strait increased sharply as China conducted missle tests and live-fire exercises this week (8 March - 15 March 1996). In response, Taiwan troops stepped up their defence capabilities and the US dispatched two aircraft carrier battle groups to the region. Analysts and the diplomatic cops agreed that hostilities were not likely to break out and that China's exercises were taking place to prevent Taiwan from moving away from the reunification course. |
