Abstract | Just a month before Lee Teng-hui's inauguration as the island's first directly elected leader, Lee is finding his greatest challenges will be generated at home. For a growing majority in Taiwan, the most pressing issues are domestic: economics, corruption, law and order. At the same time, the president will have to assume the delicate task of rebuilding strained cross-strait ties. Unlike the situation before legislative elections in December 1995, Lee will now need to build consensus at home for whatever moves he makes. |
