Abstract | At a meeting between British Prime Minister John Major and Li Peng during Major's visit to the territory, a huge British trade delegation to China was arranged, while at the same time Beijing restated its position on several Hong Kong matters - indicating to some that London's commercial interests would be placed ahead of policy on the territory. Major's tone towards China during his keynote speech in Hong Kong thus came as a surprise, as did his announcements on the status of the territory's ethnic minorities and war widows, and on visa-free travel to the United Kingdom after the handover. |
