Abstract | While world attention was being focused on the Taiwan Strait, where the mainland is reported to be massing troops for a major military exercise in the wake of the presidential elections on the island, Japan made an unexpected declaration of a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, which is expected to cover much of the Yellow and East China seas. The announcement is expected to divert some of China's concern over the strait crisis. It also revived a dispute between China and Japan over a group of islands known as Diaoyutai in Chinese and Senkaku in Japanese. |
