AbstractBeijing proclaims 1996 the year of the retail revolution, having decided late 1995 to open up more of the consumer market to foreign competition. A revolution always sounds good. But its meaning is seldom understood. It certainly means more than setting up more distribution facilities. A real revolution, "a consumer revolution with Chinese characteristics," involves the larger question of how society adapts to the growing mass of increasingly urbanized consumers.
